Made at the height of their 1980s Hong Kong pop culture careers, Maggie Cheung and Cherie Chung co-star in this coming-of-age tale of female friendship. When Nancy (Cheung) and So-So (Chung) meet in high school, they become inseparable. After a fleeting rendezvous with the handsome, bookish Jiang Jia Ming (Shingo Tsurumi), they while away innocent hours fantasising about an ideal romance with him. As Nancy and So-So grow, their financial circumstances lead them in different directions, but their friendship remains firm — until Ming re-enters their lives ten years after their first meeting.
Newly restored in 4K, this endearing romance by Yonfan is an adaption of the beloved Hong Kong novel by Yi Shu. Dealing with questions of career, love and economic security after the 1987 ‘Black Monday’ stock market crash, Last Romance sheds light on the considerations faced by young women in Hong Kong in the decade before handover.
