Set in a cramped boarding house in 1960s Hong Kong, Mrs Chan (Maggie Cheung) and Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung) discover that their spouses are having an affair with each other. Away from the prying eyes of their neighbours, they embark on a fantasy reenactment of the betrayal, all the while repressing their own forbidden yearnings.
Wong Kar-Wai’s heady, sensual masterpiece In the Mood for Love is the film that cemented Maggie Cheung's as one of the iconic figures of contemporary cinema. Recently voted the fifth greatest film ever made in the BFI's influential Sight & Sound Poll, this intoxicating romantic drama is a poignant meditation on longing, memory and the passage of time. In her most renowned role, Maggie Cheung gives a virtuosic performance of restraint, with small looks and gestures taking her on-screen chemistry with Tony Leung to boiling point while suggesting untold emotional depths.
