A groundbreaking blockbuster and the first Chinese-language film to top the US box office, Hero is a visually extravagant feast of luscious wuxia martial arts choreography directed by Zhang Yimou and shot by frequent Wong Kar-wai cinematographer Christopher Doyle.
Set during the Warring States period in Ancient China, the film unfolds through a series of conflicting narratives telling of a plot to assassinate Ying Zheng (Chen Dao Ming), who seeks to unite China and found the Qin empire. Having survived assassination attempts by Long Sky (Donnie Yen), Flying Snow (Maggie Cheung) and Broken Sword (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai), the would-be emperor has forbidden visitors from approaching him. Nameless (Jet Li), a fourth assassin, breaks through these defences, and tells the story of how he overcame Ying Zheng’s enemies. Through the course of their conversation, the future of the empire hangs in the balance.
