An electrifying and delirious tale of jaded cops taking on Hong Kong triad gangs, Hard Boiled was John Woo’s final feature in Hong Kong before his move to Hollywood. With its incredible 'gun-fu' style action and transcendent style, the film took action cinema to new heights and remains one of the most influential works in the genre.
When alcoholic, clarinet playing Inspector "Tequila" Yuen Ho-yan (Chow Yun-fat) loses his partner in a teahouse shootout with gun smugglers, he sets out to exact his revenge, throwing police protocol to the wind. Together with undercover cop and origami enthusiast Alan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai), who has infiltrated the gangs as an assassin, they enter a dizzying and uneasy collaboration to bring down power-hungry triad boss Wong (Anthony Wong), culminating in an unforgettable shootout in a hospital. Drawing on the gritty restraint of Dirty Harry 1971, the spectacle of Bulitt 1968, and the icy cool of Le Samourai 1967, Woo created one of the most original and extraordinarily inventive action films of the century.
