Based on a Chinese folk tale, this visually stunning, phantasmagorical story of reincarnation casts Maggie Cheung as Green Snake, a demon seeking human form to enter the cycle of Saṃsāra and eventually attain enlightenment. Along with her sister, White Snake (Joey Wong), she enters a village, where the two sisters are embraced as healers. Fat-hoi (Vincent Zhao), a Buddhist monk trained to hunt and eliminate demons, suspects the sisters and plots their demise, but the question over who has the right to improve themselves spiritually has dramatic consequences for all. An effervescent, erotic and entrancing gem from Hong Kong cinema legend Tsui Hark.
