Made in the aftermath of the Tiananmen Square massacre, Clara Law’s harrowing migration melodrama tells of an American dream unravelling into chaos. In a magnificent, layered performance, Maggie Cheung plays Li Hung, a young woman from a village in Guangzhou, who longs to live in the West. Leaving behind her infant son and schoolteacher husband Nansan (Tony Leung Ka-fai), she travels to New York on a student visa, only to suddenly cut ties with them. Nansan, entering America as an undocumented migrant, sets about finding her and is soon absorbed into the squalid underbelly of the metropolis, in this dark and riveting drama.
