Maggie Cheung shines in this epic bittersweet romance, which spans the globe, from China to Hong Kong and New York. Xiaojun (Canto-pop star Leon Lai) arrives in Hong Kong from rural mainland China, seeking his fortune so he can marry his girlfriend. He is bewildered by city life until he strikes up an unlikely friendship with entrepreneurial fellow mainlander Qiao (Maggie Cheung). Despite a growing attraction, the two decide to resist their longing for each other and remain friends, but how long can it last?
Directed by Second Wave filmmaker Peter Chan, Comrades, Almost a Love Story won nine awards at the 1996 Hong Kong Film Awards, earning Maggie Cheung a Best Actress accolade. With a soundtrack of music by Teresa Teng – the first Chinese pop star whose music united Chinese-speaking regions – the film is a tale of the dreams that fuel the Chinese diaspora.
