As Tears Go By was the first of five collaborations between Maggie Cheung and director Wong Kar-Wai. In a major shift from the light supporting roles that had dominated her career to date, her performance in this gritty crime film earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
Wong’s directorial debut takes the hallmarks of the Hong Kong gangster genre and imbues them with pathos and his inimitable dreamy pop aesthetic. Wah (Andy Lau) works as an enforcer for a gangster in Kowloon, but his job is complicated by the reckless actions of his friend and sidekick Fly (Jacky Cheung). When Wah is tasked with hosting his cousin Ngor (Maggie Cheung), who is visiting Kowloon for medical treatment, he begins to imagine a new, gentler life for the two of them. However, when Fly’s impetuous actions incense a rival gang, Wah finds he must choose between his loyalty and his own hopes for himself.
