Made with a modest budget and released with little fanfare in 1986, A Better Tomorrow quickly became a genre-defining blockbuster, and went on to influence action cinema around the world. Featuring the hallmarks of what would later be defined as the ‘heroic bloodshed’ film — including themes of loyalty and redemption, as well as hyper-stylised gunplay — Woo’s breakout feature is a high-octane, blood-splattered opus that blends heartfelt melodrama with thrilling action.
Ho (Ti Lung) is a gangster who calls on his friend Mark (Chow Yun-fat) to avenge his father’s death. When the hit goes wrong, Ho winds up in prison. Upon release, he finds that his younger brother Kit (Leslie Cheung), a cop, holds him responsible for the death of their father, and that Mark is downtrodden and working under the crime-boss Shing (Lee Tse Ho). When Shing turns on Mark and Kit, Ho must step back into the world of crime for one last job, fighting for the honour of brotherhood in all its forms.
